For the safety of its swimmers, the Lone Star Summer Swim League follows the recommendation of the American Red Cross that racing starts should not be taught in less than 6 feet of water.
Since the Deerfield pool is 5 feet and we cannot let swimmers dive head first into the pool (either from the blocks or the deck) until they have demonstrated that they can safely control the depth of their dives, we make arrangements to dive certify swimmers at an alternate location (TBA).
USA Swimming established a procedure that ensures and certifies their swimmers ability to safely perform racing starts that incorporates the teaching method developed by the American Red Cross. The Deerfield Dragon Swim Team adopted the process as developed by USA Swimming.
Swimmers that are new to the team and ...
- are 10 years of age or younger or
- having less than one year of competitive swimming experience
must satisfactorily complete the racing start learning progression set forth in the American Red Cross Safety Training for Swim Coaches Manual. The process takes just a few minutes and the success rate is very high.
Swimmers that are new to the team and 11 years of age and older that have at least one year of competitive swimming experience can be certified by demonstrating their ability to dive safely without completing the racing start learning progression.
This certification only has to be performed the first year a swimmer joins a team and does not have to be repeated in subsequent years.
Please let us know if you have any questions or concerns about the process.
